It’s that time of year. Everyone wants to trade the cold, for a warmer climate… Vacation time! If you’re like most, vacation quickly becomes a time to eat whatever you want…whenever you want it.. Then you come home feeling worse than when you went away!
Setting An Intention
How do you stop the cycle? You have to set an intention. “On this trip, I will relax, disconnect from Facebook, and email, and soak up some warm sun!”
This is a great intention! Your mindset, going into the vacation isn’t ” I can’t wait to eat…” Your mindset, about the vacation, will influence your decision about what to eat, while you are away.
Will You Indulge?
Of course! But only a little bit. Once you have the right mindset, over indulgence won’t be an issue. When you aren’t limiting yourself, you won’t feel like you’re being deprived, and feel the need to splurge, constantly. Allow a few bites of dessert, a glass of wine, or a treat.
Below are a few take away points. Keep in mind that some of these principles can apply to our everyday life to enhance our health and well-being.
You need to disconnect and unplug from technology. Constantly being accessible via email, and social media, does not allow you time to turn inward and listen to your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Find a time each week; maybe it is Sunday afternoons, when you don’t check your phone, email, or Facebook.
Having a plan is ESSENTIAL. Setting intentions about how you want your experience on vacation to be is a critical foundation that will guide your decisions.
Things don’t always go as planned or you may decide to change your plan and that is ok, at least you are being present and aware of you actions.
You don’t always have to be DOING, spend time just BEING.
You can indulge in great tasting food, without going overboard and feeling fatigued, bloated, and sluggish. Indulging in dessert, wine, or other favorite food doesn’t mean that you need to go overboard, and have it every night, or multiple times per day. You can have a few bites, one glass of wine, and be completely satisfied and content.
Listen to your body. It is constantly giving you signals as to what it needs: rest, water, food, touch, movement, etc. Whenever possible, listen to it and give it what it needs. Often times we reach for food or beverages because we know that we need something but we don’t know what or can’t stop what we are doing at that moment so we use food/beverages to increase our mood/emotions.
You can come home from a vacation, without guilt or even gaining any extra weight! It’s all about your intentions, and your mindset!
