My journey began when I had reached the point of total frustration trying to treat “the big three” – hypertension, high cholesterol, and type II diabetes.
Each time I went to the Doctor’s for my 3 monthly check-up, it seemed I needed yet another medication, from increasing my cholesterol dosage, to yet one more diabetes pill.
And yet the results were not good and, in fact, getting worse.
After reaching the point of taking 3 separate pills for diabetes and reading about the possible damage done through statins (statins are often blamed for causing type II diabetes) I knew it was time to do something.
Added to that I had the Doctor telling me I needed to lose weight and, boy, had I tried.
I just couldn’t maintain a workout program.
I needed help!
Fortunately, a friend introduced me to the gym and to Chris.
After meeting with Chris, doing a one on one 1 hour workout, and following up with a discussion I started to realize I didn’t just need to lose weight I had to change my lifestyle.
Chris explained I needed to change the way I eat along with what I eat (I guess I already knew I had to change what I ate), what I didn’t realize was that – carbs ain’t carbs …. now I know.
My idea of carbs was multigrain bread and potatoes (love potatoes) and some green vegetables but preferably no salads.
I had 3 meals a day and some snack foods at night.
Chris immediately put me onto 5 meals a day with an optional evening snack and I was all for that.
However, those meals were smaller than the normal. SMALLER??
I’m not sure that sunk in while we were talking but it did when I got home.
Anyway, it wasn’t all that bad and it worked for me.
For the last year, Chris has worked with me and guided me through the thought process of where I needed to be and what my goals needed to be.
At first I was excited, – I lost 25 lbs after 6 months!
And then, nothing. I stayed at 25 lbs.
BUT, I had reduced my percent body fat from almost 20% to 12%.
I wasn’t losing weight, I was losing fat.
Then that stayed at the same on my next assessment – now I was starting to think I’d maxed out.
What next! Each assessment, Chris would ask what my goal was for the next 3 months and each time my focus was weight or fat.
I had completely missed the point – my morning blood sugar level had dropped from 250 mg/dL to 50 mg/dL meaning I could stop 2 of the 3 pills I was taking.
My cholesterol LDL was to the point I could halve my statin dosage, and now my blood pressure is low and I may even be able to reduce this dosage.
Then I realized – I needed to be focusing on my HEALTH not my weight!
If I can continue with these successes (and I will) that’s all I need.
I know I can keep this up not just because of my successes but because I have the help and support from all my friends at the gym.
This includes Chris of course but everyone there gives me moral support through the workouts as well as the 90 day challenges …. The 24 day challenges … all the gym programs … and so on.
So, to finish up with my story, do you know the best part?
Now I can keep up with my 18 and 15 year olds the way I did 10 years back and do the things we used to do together.
That’s the best part.
